The City of Plainwell welcomes you! Included in our newsletters you will find information ranging from our local business, City Hall news, and other events that impact our community.

"Members of that Greatest Generation who make-up most of the membership of Plainwell's 33-member VFW Post 9377, have embarked on an ambitious project. These military veterans, most from the World War II era, are determined to build 'The Greater Plainwell Veteran's Memorial' in the city's Fannie Pell Park. The veteran's want to dedicate the memorial on Veteran's Day, November 11, 2009.

Spokesman for the group, Jack Shoemaker, 81, project chairman of Plainwell and WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy, said the VFW Post will be selling paving bricks engraved with three lines with the name, rank, branch of service and in what conflict a veteran served.

These bricks will honor all those who served their country during times of war or peace, here in the United State or overseas. The bricks will form the paved area in front of the proposed memorial monument. The sale of the bricks to the general public will provide the 'lion's share' of funding for the total project. The bricks with 14 character lines will sell for $50 each; 18 characters per line will cost $57.50.

Shoemaker said the VFW has set a goal of selling 500 bricks in the first phase of the fund drive. Order forms are available at Plainwell City Hall. For more information, contact Shoemaker at (269) 685-5746 or Art Teitgen at (269) 685-6572." (Bill Brown, Union Enterprise: June 18, 2008).

It is not unusual for the windows of Campbell's Pharmacy to be adorned with colorful displays. But from now until the Island City Festival, its windows will definitely have an added "splash" of color, thanks to the many local residents and business community members who participated in the second annual Island City Life: Photography Contest. With over 70 quality photographs taken by members of the community, one can see the artistic talent of those here in the area, and sources of artistic inspiration found in Plainwell. The photos should appear on the windows either this Thursday, July 10 or Friday. At that time, the public is invited to cast their vote at Campbell's Pharmacy to decide which photo stands out as the "People's Choice Award." You can cast your ballot inside Campbell's Pharmacy, 102 S. Main, during their regular business hours. Winners will be announced on Saturday, July 19 during Island City Festival. Be sure to allow some time to decide, as there are far too many high-quality photos from which to choose! Good luck!
The third annual kayak race will be Saturday, July 19 at 11 am during the Plainwell Island City Festival. The event will feature two races: those who provide their own kayak and those who use a supplied kayak. Racers in the second heat are limited to the number of kayaks available. The entry fee is $20. To prepare for the race, training takes place Tuesdays at Fannie Pell Park at 7 pm, weather permitting. Prizes will be awarded for first-and second-place winners at an awards ceremony in the community tent at 1:45 pm. The event is sponsored by Bridge Street Gallery, the Plainwell Downtown Development Authority, Kayaker's Run, and Rizzo Packaging. For more information or to register, contact Brian Pennings at (269) 271-2360 or Cathy Green at (269) 685-3161...

The brass is coming to Plainwell! Wander down to the Plainwell Coffee Mill on Monday, July 14 or the Plainwell United Methodist Church on Wednesday, July 16 between 9 am and 10:30 in the morning to view "the brass." These historic automobiles are typically identified as brass era cars, all built before 1916 and so named because of their brass head lamps, bulb horns, and windshield frames. The cars are driven by antique car enthusiasts who restore and maintain vintage machinery. When these cars were built, the automobile was considered to be a passing fancy, a plaything of the wealthy that was often scorned by famers and town people alike.

In addition to Buick, Ford and Cadillac, the cars on tour carry names long lost in the pages of history: Abbot-Detroit, American-Fiat, Davis, EMF, Hudson, Knox, Lohr, Marmon, Maxwell, Mitchell, Moline, Overland, Packard, Peerless, Pierce, Pope-hartford, Rambler, REO, SJV, Speedwell, Stevens-Duryea, Studebaker, Velle, White, Winton and Locomobile.
The Ransom District Library welcomes John Ball Zoo "Z's" Kids Club Traveling Animal Show on Monday, July 15 at 11:00 am. Enjoy 30 minutes of LIVE animal demonstrations with theme-related animal biofacts, and a colorable bookmark.

The Library would also like to announce the Summer Reading Program. The 2008 Summer Reading Program is open to young people, pre-school through young adult, with programs, prize drawings, story hours, a reading club, and more. Registration for the Summer Reading Program began on June 16, but you can still register by calling the library at (269) 685- 8024 or by visiting their website.
