Located in the southwestern portion of Michigan, the City of Plainwell is ideally located being approximately half way between Chicago and Detroit and only a short drive from the beaches of Lake Michigan. US-131 links Plainwell to the cities of Kalamazoo, located 15 minutes to the south and Grand Rapids, only 40 minutes to the north. While these metropolitan areas influence Plainwell with business, employment, arts and entertainment, and recreational opportunities, the City of Plainwell supports numerous businesses that meet the majority of the daily shopping and recreation needs of residents.
Commonly referred to as the “Island City,” the City of Plainwell is almost entirely surrounded by the waters of the Kalamazoo River and its local tributary - the Mill Race. Providing both recreational opportunities and aesthetic beauty for the community, the Kalamazoo River has always played a central role in the City of Plainwell’s unique character and history.
