The mill ceased operation in November 2000 and was acquired by the City of Plainwell in August 2006 with a vision to redevelop it as a multi-use facility. The impact of the Plainwell Paper Mill’s closing in 2006, while having a significant impact on the City of Plainwell, was buffered because of Plainwell’s diverse economy and presence of a wide-range of employment opportunities.
