Public Works - Frequently Asked Questions

Dumps

We are frequently asked where a resident can dispose of unwanted items, construction materials and other rubbish. To our knowledge, all “dumps” in the area have closed in recent years. The Miller Street Transfer And Recycling Station at 3031 Miller Road in Kalamazoo (388-3346) and the 100th Street Landfill at 300 – 100th Street in Byron Center (877-4192) will accept your refuse. Please be aware that there is a fee and that some restrictions apply. You can call them for more information.
Dead/Injured Animals
Pets: If you see pets that appear to be injured or dead, notify Public Safety (685-9858) or Allegan County Animal Control (269-673-8879).
Wildlife: For wildlife that appears to be injured or orphaned, call Animal Rehab of SW Michigan (344-3929; if no answer, emergency pager 230-2984).
For your own safety, never approach an animal that appears to in injured or ill.
Yard Sale and Other Signs
Signs are NOT allowed on trees, on utility poles or in street right-of-ways. Signs must be placed ONLY on private property. Signs found to be in violation may be removed. Never put a nail or other fastener into a city tree. We appreciate your cooperation on these important safety concerns.
Vacationing
Before leaving town for an extended time, it is a good idea call Public Safety or City Hall with the name and telephone number of a responsible person who will have access to your home or business in event of an emergency.
