The Plainwell Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit voluntary membership organization which advocates for business and industry in Plainwell, and serves as a collective voice on issues affecting business and the Plainwell community. With new faces joining the board and staff, the Chamber is ready and committed to enhancing the local business climate and maintaining a high quality of life in the community.

Katie Bell Moore, director of the Ransom District Library in Plainwell, is the new chamber president. She is looking forward to her new role and enhancing the Chamber's ability to provide promotion to members, recruit new members, and raise the profile of the community. The board is also comprised of Rodney Rieth, accountant; Richard McDermott of National City Bank; Cynthia Stannard of the Kalamazoo Gazette; Susie Cooper, owner of Susie's Sew and So; Maria Deneau of Life Care Center; Susan Prentice -Sao, Attorney; and Ray Fuller, City of Plainwell Council Member.

Providing the staff support and successfully growing and developing Chamber services and events under her leadership, the community is sad to see Jan Collins move on to other endeavors. However, Joyce Mormon, the Chamber's new staff, is excited to join the Chamber team and Chirs Haas (the Chamber's other key staff member) by adding her special skills and interests to the Chamber by fostering relationships with businesses to help them overcome obstacles. Welcome Joyce to her new position by calling 685-8877 or in person at 798 E. Bridge Street. Chamber meetings are every third Wednesday at noon at City Hall.

Are you a proud property owner of a business or a home, and want some recognition for your hard work in keeping your property beautiful? We think that it's just as important to highlight the positive contributions in the community while addressing blight and code violations at the same time. The First Annual City of Plainwell Beautification Awards Program aims to do just that by recognizing responsible property maintenance that adds beauty to the city and serves as a model for how homes and businesses can look.

The program was stimulated when the city found out that one of our very own businesses, the Plainwell Counseling Center on Hill Street, was recently recognized by the Kalamazoo In Bloom and the Kalamazoo Garden Council for the most "Inspiring Garden." While pride of ownership flourishes throughout the city, we thought it was time to "thank you" all for all that you do to contribute to the unique and beautiful character to our hometown.
Western Michigan Financial Services is celebrating 25 years in business this year! Western Michigan Financial Services was started by Nancy Heilig in her home. The company has grown to include three additional offices in Texas, Byron Center, Michigan and Charlotte, Michigan.

Nancy has lived in Plainwell since 1975 and has been very active in the community. She has served on the Plainwell DDA and the Plainwell Chamber of Commerce. One of the her goals in starting her business was to "give back" to the community. Nancy says that one factor in the business's success is how the "firm takes a holistic approach to financial planning and cares about the whole person. You aren't just a number." Please join us in congratulating Nancy and her staff at Western Michigan Financial Services and toast to many more years of success!
Have you noticed some dust and dirt blowing around the Plainwell Life Care Center on Brigham over the past few months? Definitely signals of progress, the Life Care Center is almost finished with a complete overhaul of their parking lot, with new landscaping, lighting and design! To do so, a demolition project on an adjacent house was completed that has allowed these new curb appeal improvements to take place.
Their interior has also gotten a recent facelift, with improvements made to the dining room, activities room, resident bathrooms, main hallways and front offices. All have been updated! Next steps for Life Care Center's dramatic improvements will be completion of a new Therapy/Rehab gym, new ceilings and flooring and an entirely new wing dedicated for Rehabilitation patients with private rooms.

Another significant change in Plainwell's business district is the closing of Arie's Cafe this August. Sadly, the city lost a great community leader, Arie's owner Rob Powers, along the way who had creativity and energetic ideas about how to revitalize downtown. We wish him well, and will miss his involvement and energy. The City of Plainwell will help market the busines in partnership with the real estate community, which will hopefully result in a smooth transition to a new owner.
Sponsored by the Plainwell Area Arts & Craft Club, the 35h annual Plainwell Area Arts & Craft Show will be November 15th from 10 am to 4 pm at the Plainwell High School on Starr Road. There are still openings for crafters. Booths are $50.00. Exhibitors are still being sought.
For more information and an application, call Robyn Kaiser at (269) 672-9454.
Have you noticed you don't get whiplash anymore when driving down Allegan Street in Plainwell? From August 15-18, MDOT pulvarized the old pavement along Allegan Street and laid the smooth asphalt that we enjoy today. Our local Plainwell Public Works Department has also been busy on paving projects during the month of September, resurfacing West Chart Street from South Main to Park, Park Street from West Chart to West Bridge, Floral Street from East Bridge to Mariette and West Street from Gilkey to Prince.

It's also that time of year to remind everyone about Loose Leaf Collection information, which will take place October 27 through November 26, 2008. The City will use its leaf vacuum to remove loose leaves from all city streets except M-89. A two-person crew will operate the vacuum and a truck during the operation. The streets will be swept after collection is finished for the season.
The City will continue to require residents living on M- 89 to bag their leaves. All other residents should not bag leaves. Simply rake leaves into the road along the curb or shoulder.
City crews will begin vacumming leaves on Major streets prior to Halloween to assure the safety of pedestrians during festivities surrounding that event. Please do not block sidewalks with leaves.
A five-person city crew will augment leaf collection with a loader and a backhoe or bobcat, two trucks and a street sweeper if necessary during the collection period.
The City may stockpile leaves from streets at a City lot on the east side of Jersey between Starr Road and Hill Street and at the City topsoil storage area north of Kenyon Park. Leaves stockpiled at the Jersey Street lot will be removed at a later date. Kenyon Park leaves will be composted and used in the city.
Please call the Department of Public Works at 685- 9363 with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Emilie Schada, Economic Development Manager
