The City of Plainwell welcomes you! Included in our newsletters you will find information ranging from our local business, City Hall news, and other events that impact our community.

Back in 2008, City of Plainwell staff travelled to Detroit to attend the International Brownfields Conference, which attracts owners of brownfields and developers from across the country. As a result, the city presented the Plainwell Paper Mill- the city's largest Brownfield site- as a significant redevelopment opportunity. Several important contacts and relationships were made with developers equipped with the ability to transform underutilized Brownfield properties back into productive use.

After introducing the Plainwell Paper Mill to the development community and showcasing Plainwell to the rest of the country, the city felt it was the opportune time to distribute "Requests for Qualifications" to developers. RFQ's are essentially a calling for development plans.

Answering our call were three highly skilled redevelopment firms that presented their plans for redeveloping the Plainwell Paper Mill. After a series of scrutinizing interviews to evaluate the firms, Conestoga-Rovers & Associates was chosen to take the next step toward redeveloping the mill: to come before the public to present their plans for the mill, speak about their skills and background, answer questions from the community and meet directly with the community stakeholders who understand the importance of the Plainwell Paper Mill project.

On Tuesday, June 2 at 6:30 pm, the city will host a public meeting with CRA. The meeting will be at the Plainwell Community Center, 798 E. Bridge Street. This public meeting is the first of several steps necessary for the mill's redevelopment, but makes us one step closer. Next and important subsequent steps will be to negotiate a pre-development agreement and then a development agreement with the developer.

What better way to celebrate the kick-off of summer than with the tunes, melodies and harmonies of the Plainwell High School Band and Choir?

The concert series officially begins on Wednesday, May 27 at 7:30 pm at the band shell with the talented musicians from the award-winning Plainwell High School Music Department under the direction of Mr. Paul Mundo and Keith Cahoon, choir director.

Representing an annual tradition of providing Plainwell residents weekly doses of high-quality entertainment, this year's concert series promises a diverse line-up ranging from classical, to folk and even competitive dance!

Just print out the schedule and put it on your fridge!

It's that time of year again to dust off your cameras, get outside and participate in the third annual Island City Photography Contest!

Judging from the more than 100 participants submitting high-quality photos last year, many of you have been eagerly awaiting this contest's return, but to make it even better, there are more perks for participating! This year, the Best in Show winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to The Calico Rabbit Craft Mall along with $200 in photography services from local studio, Photographic Artistry and a matted enlargement of their photo.

The photo that receives the most votes from the public and wins the "People's Choice Award" will receive a $20 gift certificate to The Calico Rabbit Craft Mall and a matted enlargement of their photo.

Open to people of all ages and photograhic expertise, everyone who enters will receive a free treat from Dean's Ice Cream!

Anyone can submit up to five 4x6 unframed photos taken in Plainwell along with a CD. High res. digital photos are preferred, and prints from negatives will also need a CD.

Sumbissions from last year's contest can be viewed on the city's website under the Island City Life section.

The City of Plainwell is beautiful because of the dedicated residents, property owners and other stakeholders who go above and beyond keeping their properties well kept, eye catching, and attractive. All of this work contributes to a positive image of the city as a whole. To recognize you for your efforts, the city established an awards program that every season, accepts nominations for properties and honors the winning beautiful property with a recognition sign and a framed certificate.

The winner of the Spring Beautification Award, based on a tally of votes by the Parks and Trees Commission, is the William Crispe Community House and will be formally recognized during the City Council meeting on May 26, 2009 at 7 pm. The Western Hills Garden Club nominated the property for their care of the community house's grounds. They noted in their nomination form how "the care of these gardens brings joy to our members and the results are appreciated by both the residents and neighbors who often thank us as they pass by in cars, walking and pushing strollers. The club also added a cutting garden so that the senior residents can enjoy fresh flowers in their rooms." Well, we can't argue with that!

The following properties were also nominated for the Spring Beautification Award and are very deserving of recognition as well:
310 East Bridge Street
111 N. Main Street
508 S. Main Street
921 Charles Avenue
318 Sherwood Avenue

With the finale of one season, there is the welcoming of the next: summer! Nomination forms for the Summer Beautification Award are now available on the city's website, at City Hall, and at the Ransom District Public Library and will be accepted until August 10, 2009. Don't be modest- you can nominate your own property.
What is 17 feet tall, weighs over 200,000 pounds, and is made entirely out of sand? The Memorial Sand Sculpture, of course. You just have to see it with your own eyes. Words don't do justice to this impressive work of art just waiting to be exhibited for this first time to the public inside the Plainwell Paper Mill: Saturday, May 23 from 10 am until 9 pm and this Memorial Day from 10 am to 6 pm.
The result of talented local artist, Charlie Wakefield, the Memorial Sand Sculpture is a labor of love for the artist who has spent over 500 hours creating the Memorial Sand Sculpture to help raise funds to build a Veterans Memorial in Sherwood Park.

Please show your support for past and present veterans by coming out and enjoying the festivities: Food, fun and a fabulous exhibit honoring those who have given us so much for our freedom.
Donations will be gratefully accepted.
Parades, Ice Cream and Sand describe this year's Memorial Day in Plainwell. In addition to stopping by the Memorial Sand Sculpture inside the Plainwell Paper Mill, be sure to "pull up some curb" along M-89 to enjoy the Memorial Day Parade.
Organized by the Twin Cities Jaycees, the parade begins at 11:00 a.m. Memorial Day at the firehall and travels east on E. Bridge St. to the cemetary where the VFW will conduct a ceremony to commemorate their fallen comrades.
Then cool off with some ice cream during an Ice Cream Social sponsored by the Plainwell Chamber of Commerce from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Plainwell Community Center.

Call the Plainwell Chamber of Commerce at (269) 685-8877 to volunteer or if you have questions.
The Play N Well Players' Second Annual One Acts Festival will feature eight short plays- something for everyone.
Don't miss the shows on Friday, May 29 and Saturday, May 30 at 8pm or the Sunday matinee at 2 pm.
Shows are on the second floor of the Community Center, 798 E. Bridge Street, in the beautiful newly renovated theater.
Advance tickets are available at Harding's Market, Nancy's Kitchen or by calling (269) 271-PLAY.
Two complimentary tickets are available to each evening show on a first-come-first-serve basis. Call Emilie at Plainwell City Hall at (269) 685-6821 to snap them up.
Starting June 1, the Plainwell Coffee Mill will present a new choice to its customers. Do you like to "perk up" over one of the mill's specialty coffee blends and caffeinated beverages, or would you rather "wind down" with a glass of wine, beer or dessert coffee drink? Depending on the time of day, the choice should be easier....
The Plainwell Coffee Mill's looks forward to serving you during their new Summer hours:
6 am to 8 pm Monday - Friday Saturdays from 7 am to 3 pm

The Plainwell Coffee Mill and Eesley Place Banquets are also searching for vendors wishing to sell their fresh produce. If you are interested in participating in the Plainwell Farmers' Market on the first Friday of each month in the parking lot of the historic Eesley Mill, please contact Emilie at (269) 685-6821.
Vendors that provide fruit, vegetables and baked goods or other local products for sale to the public are welcome to inquire.
The City is embarking on the 12-month process to update our Master Plan- a blueprint for the future. A Master Plan is a comprehensive document, long- range in its view, that is intended to guide development in the city for the next ten to twenty years. The Master Plan sets public policies regarding growth and development and the information and concepts in the Master Plan are intended to guide local decisions on public and private uses of land and the provision of public facilities. A Master Plan forms the basis upon which zoning decisions are made.

Residents and property owners should keep their eye out for a post card in the mail in the next few weeks that will direct you to a link on our city's website that will display a short survey about major issues in the city that will help develop the Master Plan. The survey will help the city understand how we can improve meeting the needs of residents, places of residence, recreation, industry, trade, service and other uses of land.
