The City of Plainwell welcomes you! Included in our newsletters you will find information ranging from our local business, City Hall news, and other events that impact our community.

A fused-glass and quilting artist recently finalized her purchase of the three-story historic building, 119 N. Main Street, in downtown Plainwell. The once vacant building was owned by the late Sue Cooper, a skilled seamstress and longtime owner of Susie's Sew 'n So and Resale Shop.

The new owner, Carol Trosper, is very excited to breathe new life into the building and add yet another artisitc destination to the downtown through her studio, "Dancing Dogs Art Glass" that will complement other destinations featuring unique, one- of-a-kind art like Another Man's Treasure, BBMoon.com, and The Calico Rabbit Craft Mall. Her specialty in fused glass has emerged over the last few years as one of the hottest art forms. Fused glass, in particular, is now a popular form of jewelry making.

Carol will use the space to make her fused-glass creations and will be open to the public starting on the first Saturday in April. Her studio will be open every Saturday but she will be open by appointment as well throughout the week. In addition to being able to view an artist at work, the building will feature Carol's "vintage items and mid-century modern furniture and collectibles."

Be sure to welcome Carol, one of downtown's newest business community members. Her creativity will definitely be an asset to downtown.

Approximately 30 people attended the first organizational meeting for the Island City Festival at the Community Center on February 9, 2009. The Chamber wants the festival to reflect the participation, involvement and ideas from the community, and ideas for the festival are always welcome. Several new ideas emerged from the first organizational meeting, such as a fly-inn, an arts and crafts show, antique tractor show, a teen zone and motorcycle show.

The 2009 Island City Festival is set for July 24 and 25 and will be its 31st year.

Mark your calendars for the next organizational meeting for March 16, 2009 at 7 pm at the Plainwell Community Center. If you have questions, feel free to call the Chamber at 685-8877.

The Plainwell Chamber of Commerce will officially welcome the Calico Rabbit with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, March 13 at 10 am.

Michigan State University Extension would like homeowners to know that they "know it's been rough, but they're there to help" in the event that foreclosure is a reality in your life. MSU Extension has started a foreclosure intervention program, partnering with certified housing counseling agencies in Allegan County to help increase awareness about the foreclosure process so you can make the best decisions for you and your family.

The Ransom District Library provides not only current and relevant books, media and information, but entertainment as well by making sure the arts are accessible to members of the Plainwell community. Following the heels of the recent activity of muralist Conrad Kaufman who installed a beautiful new mural in the library's children's area, the library has expanded its artistic niche even more by hosting monthly art shows where local artists have an opportunity to show their creations. Local Crystal Overhuel was the library's first featured artist and had photos and collages on display.

Plan on taking a peek in the library's Burchfield Room to see the new art displayed for the month. March will bring the work of mosaic artist Marty Bosma and Martha Serafini.
The City of Plainwell's Beautification Awards program is a new city-wide competition that recognizes businesses, residences, organizations and other commercial establishments for contributing to the improvement and beautification of our community.
