Plainwell’s highly developed economy meets the needs of shoppers, employees, and employers alike. With a quaint downtown located within walking distance to where residents live, patrons will find what they need whether it be antiques, clothing, or to relax in one of Plainwell’s fine restaurants and cafes. Additionally, a strong mix of job types is present, ranging from retail to industrial and from service to professional. For companies and firms considering Plainwell, the high level of skills will enable them to recruit the people they want.

The most recent statistics from the US Census Bureau indicate that there are more than 4,500 jobs in Plainwell in the areas of manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail, professional and technical services, arts and entertainment, health care, and administrative services. These jobs have an annual payroll of more than $91 million.

There are approximately 166 businesses in Plainwell, comprised of 73 in Plainwell’s Central Business District, 55 outside the Central Business District, and 38 in our industrial park. All of which contribute to Plainwell’s strong commercial and industrial tax base with wonderful businesses providing a wide range of services. Occupancy rates for both the Industrial Park and commercial district are well above the State average.
